GODS

Golfing OLD DUNSTABLIANS

The GODS were able to enjoy one of the few fine days of August (maybe we were being blessed?) yesterday when the final round of the 2007/08 Trophy was played on the excellent Rothschild Course at Mentmore, followed by a substantial lunch and a few exchanges on the future of the Golfing activities of the DSOBA (Dunstable School Old Boys' Association).

With the Trophy outcome uncertain and dependant on the final round, the pressure was on and duly produced fine performances by Tony Kempson and Gordon Mould with 38 points. Yours truly certainly couldn't match that but the 35 points brought the best two to 72 to equal Gordon's Trophy score. Tony's best two came up to 69 but the 38 was more that good enough to win the day's prize followed by David Conquest with 29 and Francis Bartlett with 28.

Nearest the Pin was won by David Conquest on the 3rd and Gordon Mould on the 11th.

This was the first GODS meeting with guests and Chris Watson (remember him from the Rugby Club?) was runner to Gary Hooper (guest of Doug Ryder) on count back, with 34 points.

The meeting also saw the very welcome appearance of eminent OD, Ross Barrington, and it is hoped that this will stimulate the participation of his contempories in the future.

So, the 2007/08 GODS Trophy remains undecided! It was, therefore, agreed that Gordon and yours truly would have a play-off, on a date to be agreed on a neutral course - Cirencester (Chris Watson's home course) to be refereed by the presence of Chris and David Conquest. I will advise you of the date and, subject to Chris's approval, any of you that are interested might like to join us for a game?

After prize presentations, both David and I informed the GODS that we were unable to continue organising the events and that Gordon Mould had kindly agreed to take over - subject to the support and help of ODs as and when required - well done, Gordon!

The raffle for Keith Hoy's donated club was drawn and won by Ron Dean. With the proceeds, a trophy - the "Shippa Trophy" - will be purchased and it was agreed that this would be played under the same rules as the GODS Trophy but for those with handicaps of 20 or over.

There was also an open discussion on the future of the GODS and its absorption into the golfing activities of the DSOBA. Alan Grigg is to put forward the proposals to the DSOBA committee....... David Conquest also reported on Richard Coombes's progress and Paul Ellis undertook to pass on our good wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

I have enjoyed putting together the GODS events with David, and I am sure that he joins me in wishing Gordon and all ODs and their guests many more enjoyable events together.

While I'm on....how's the security set up going with the site? I had noted my user name and password but this didn't seem to work - but I was able to access the site without it!

Keep up the good work - all the best
